Master the Key of G on Piano

The Key of G Major is a favorite for pop, rock, and folk music. It has just one sharp: F-sharp (F♯). Because it only uses one black key, it is often the first key students learn after C Major.

Understanding the G Major Scale

The G Major scale is almost identical to C Major, but we raise the F to F♯:

G – A – B – C – D – E – F♯ – G

G Chord Types and Inversions

  • G Major: The tonic (I). Built on G, B (major third), and D (perfect fifth).
  • G Minor: The parallel minor. Uses the flattened third (B♭) instead of B.
  • Suspended Chords: G Sus2 uses A instead of B. G Sus4 uses C instead of B.

FAQ

Q: What is the most common chord progression in G?
