I want to share a beautiful rendition of the timeless hymn, “Lebitso La Morena Jesu” (The Name of the Lord Jesus). My prayer is that this arrangement ministers to your spirit today. Whether you are starting your day with praise, navigating a busy afternoon, or seeking peace in His presence, this melody serves as a powerful reminder of His grace and majesty.
Take a moment to listen, reflect, and let the music lead you into a space of worship.
For my fellow musicians and students, playing a beloved hymn requires a delicate balance. You want to honour the traditional melody that everyone knows and loves, while bringing your own soulful interpretation to the keys.
Here is my approach to playing “Lebitso La Morena Jesu”:
The most important part of any hymn is the melody, as it carries the lyrics in the listener’s mind. I make sure the top note of my right-hand chords always voices the lead melody clearly, allowing the song to “sing” even without a vocalist.
Instead of busy, distracting bass movements, I opted for strong, rooted octaves and gentle, rolling arpeggios in the left hand. This creates a warm, supportive foundation that gives the song its majestic, grounded feel.
To elevate the traditional progression, I gently introduced some modern gospel passing chords. Adding a subtle diminished chord or a suspended 4th right before resolving to the root adds emotional depth and tension to the arrangement without overpowering the simplicity of the hymn.
