There is truly none like Him. I’m sharing a soul-stirring piano cover of the powerful worship anthem, “Hayi Akekho Nje Ngawe“ by the incredibly talented Khaya Mthethwa. This song has always been a personal favourite of mine; it perfectly captures the essence of God’s greatness and His never-ending mercy.
Whether you are looking for a moment of quiet worship or you are a pianist wanting to study the “South African Gospel” sound, I hope this cover speaks to you. Sit back, close your eyes, and let the music lead you into a place of worship.
For the fellow pianists and students following my journey, I’ve infused this arrangement with specific techniques that define the modern Gospel piano sound. Here is what you should listen for:
In this cover, notice how the left hand isn’t just playing static bass notes. I use “walking” bass lines and octaves to create a sense of momentum, especially during the transitions between the verse and the chorus.
To get that “pro” sound, I’ve moved beyond basic triads. Listen for the 9ths, 11ths, and suspended chords that add colour and depth to the melody. These extensions are what turn a simple progression into a rich, emotive experience.
Gospel piano is all about the “fills.” I’ve incorporated quick melodic runs and grace notes (slurs) to mimic a vocal performance. This helps the piano “sing” the lyrics of the song even without a vocalist.
If you find these chords challenging, remember that consistency is key. Focus on one section at a time. A great way to start is by mastering the root movements before adding the complex extensions.
